2012 Atom Bombs Week 4

Persistence. It can pay off in reality and in fantasy for sure. Let’s take the following case as an example:

In his college career player X played four seasons for an ACC school rushing for 2,539 yards and 22 touchdowns on 523 carries. For 4.85 YPC. Drafted by the NY Giants 129th overall in 2009 he suffered a ruptured Achilles Tendon which forced him to miss his rookie season and was placed on IR. Player X was waived by the Giants on September 4, 2010.

A day later he was claimed off waivers by the Denver Broncos, he again was waived on September 15, and then signed to the Broncos’ practice squad on September 17, 2010. On September 21, 2010 he was signed to the active roster. Less than a month later, he was waived on October 16, 2010. In four regular season games with the Broncos, he played in three but only amassed statistics in one (two rushes for a total of minus one yard in a 31-17 road loss to the Baltimore Ravens on October 10, 2010).

Two days after being waived, he was claimed off waivers by the Indianapolis Colts on October 18, 2010. Player X was moved to the Colts active roster on November 6, 2010, then waived on November 9, 2010. He did not amass any statistics in his only game with the Colts, a 26-24 road loss to the Philadelphia Eagles on November 7, 2010.

Two more days after being waived for the fourth time, Player X was claimed off waivers by the Carolina Panthers on November 9, 2010, and then waived on November 16, 2010. He did not play in his only game with the Panthers, a 31-16 road loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on November 14, 2010.

On November 24, 2010, Brown was signed by the Washington Redskins and added to their active roster. However did not record any stats. He was released on July 28, 2011.

On August 3, 2011, he re-signed with the NY Giants. He was waived on September 3, but re-signed the next day to the practice squad. On February 5, 2012, the Giants won Super Bowl 46 against the New England Patriots. In March of 2012, he was hit with a four-game suspension by the NFL for violating the league’s substance abuse policy. He later claimed it was a result of Adderall use and eventually won an appeal, having his suspension lifted.

On September 16, after starter Ahmad Bradshaw was knocked out of the game with a neck injury, he rushed for 71 yards on 13 carries, converting a two-point conversion and scoring the game-winning touchdown against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

On September 20th of 2012, your story’s hero Andre Brown stepped in as the starter for the Giants against the Carolina Panthers on Thursday Night Football. Brown rushed for 113 yards on 20 carries, scoring two rushing touchdowns.

Really an incredible story of not giving up. 5 teams in 3 years, and waived 6 times. Most people when dealt with that kind of adversity choose the easier path and fold up. Even if he never again duplicates the monster game that he had last week, it should serve as a reminder in fantasy football to stick out the season, because you may find yourself (inexplicably at times) in a position where you can salvage your season and make a run. It’s only Week 4. The bottom team in our league is 2 games out of first. Stay active my friends. One quick thing I saw this week too that had me laughing- Wait for the Tom Brady one…

LOD vs Phinest– Two teams that made a splash last week by trading 3 TE’s! Oh and Lynch too. It will be interesting to see who gets the better of that deal this year. RGIII may be on the same path as Vick with all the hits he has been taking. If they can’t keep him upright, he may not last 16 games. Not sure why, but I am mildly amused that Gar’s WR’s rhyme. Lloyd and Floyd. All he needs now is Phillies pitcher Tyler Cloyd. Obviously the Strength here is the RB corps. If Morris can keep his job (especially now that the Skins signed former Domer Ryan Grant) he should be in a fine position. Andrew still going gutsy starting Tate each week. Tennessee is averaging 29.7 points given up to opposing RB’s so far which if their projection on Arian is correct leaves 1.34 for Tate. Hmmm… At some point the real Aaron Rodgers should emerge right? The Saints are 9th worst against QB’s so if not now… I like Andre MUCH more than either Nicks or Torrey this week. Side note, after his brother died earlier in the day and Torrey Smith came back for the game you just knew he would have a monster day. I thought that would cost me the win, but, thankfully it did not. My pick and LOTW for the 2nd straight week- LOD!

Warriors vs Dillos– I am soooo tempted to make Dave the wrong side of the Upset Special again just to get him going… Stevie Johnson should have an easy time vs New England, nobody there wants to defend a pass it seems. As long as Fred Jax can stay on the field I think he gets over the 12.34 points. Tom’s RB’s are going against the 9th and 10th hardest RB teams this week. I think both of them will have good, maybe not great games. If it is Roddy’s turn to get the love from Ryan, this may get out of hand. Like Thomas this week, the Raiders seem to struggle with physical WR’s. Stafford looks like a go, it’s just a matter of which Matt signal caller will outperform the other. My pick- Warriors!

Blitzers vs Pornos– For both teams I see some bounce-back performances ready to happen with Brady, Brees, and Steve Smith. I know they are all no doubt starters and I generally shy away from the easy calls like that, but in this case all three have started off slower than normal. So get off my back. Blitzers may be in trouble now that he is starting Burleson with Spiller out for a while. Watch him get 75+ yards and a score now too just to screw me over. Still down on Turner. It seems like all he does anymore is dance around a bit, and fall forward for 2 yards. Of course 1 of these is usually a goal line carry so… AP now gets another tough run D as the Lions are only allowing 14.23 ppg to RB’s. Cruz may have a DeSean like day this week. Big play, or nada. Miami’s D isn’t shabby either- kind of down on Ryan Willaims too. Ok ok, Upset special time- Chalk you did me dirty in this last week. Man up and take Tony down!

Topes vs Cowboys– If I were Bob, I’d play Owen Daniels over T-Gonz. I know you are going to say that my hate on Gonzalez is too much, but in this case I mean it. The Titans are the worst team against opposing TE’s. Averaging just under 23 ppg! I love the war going on between Brandon Marshall and Warren Sapp right now with Sapp calling him a “retard”. HAHA! The Giants have been awful vs WR’s but with Prince Nahgonnaworkhereanymore back healthy that could be rough for DeSean. Romo and Bryant couldn’t get together last week and now they get a Bears Defense that is toughest against QB’s and 11th against WR’s. Interesting stat I saw from ESPN’s Matthew Berry- Do you know how many 100 yard receiving games Dez has? 1. Only 1 and it came in 2010. Very interesting. Uber Rook Richardson vs the ravens D? Whoa. Welker should do well again without Hernandez in the lineup. My pick- Cowboys in a stunning double upset special!

Atoms vs SPV– OK, I like that Smith got on Cam for being down during last week’s loss. I expect a better game from him this week. Eagles have only allowed 14.47 PPG to opposing RB’s, need Bradshaw to buck this trend. I mentioned earlier who the worst team was against opposing TE’s, guess who is 2nd worst? The Lions. Hopefully my man Rudy will take advantage of this. Rough going for the SPV and Jimmy after their stunning week 1 win. Man, looking at the SPV roster it’s easier to find a white person in a McDonald’s commercial than it is to find good matchups for his squad! Haha, I kid, I kid! I think the projections should be pretty accurate for Vick around 17 points. Lot of heat and pressure on him from the head coach, but 17 sounds about right. Can Bennett keep his crazy string of great games going? Not sure this week since the Eagles are only allowing 6.3 ppg to TE’s. Kind of like Maclin as long as he goes. Looks like Reggie Bush will go, but his knee and the Cards D may limit his production. Not gonna lie, kind of worried about Benson since the Saints D has been atrocious so far. My pick… SPV!

One final thought:  And I didn’t want to pile on the Replacement refs (and thank God that Hochuli and crew are back) but I thought this was pretty good: The local NBC station in Green Bay trotted out a “Replacement” Weatherman. Well played.

As always, good luck!
